Wishful thinking vs being hopeful. Creating this space is a forcing mechanism for me. I’ve toyed with various plans and tactics over the last three years. In the winter of 2019-2020, I was brushing the dust off of my network of work colleagues and clients. I had great trips to Phoenix, New York, Greenville, and Charlotte. COVID hitting in March 2020 brought that to a halt. I spent much of my day time running the youth soccer club that I founded in 2008.
My consulting dried up during that period, and I put the company aside over the last three years. My pursuit for a job has been haphazard, unfocused, and fruitless limited to applying to job postings on LinkedIn and other job boards. Often, I would fall into self-sabotage with my actions, lack of action, and behavior. I don’t know if I’m unique in these circumstances. I haven’t really approached my next chapter with any rigor, enthusiasm, or purpose.
That brings us here. My hope is that this online place can be a catalyst for accountability, for rekindling relationships with people who are willing to lend a hand, to encourage, to connect me to others who may be looking for someone like me, to connect me to others who have been where I have been.
I want February to be twenty-eight days of new approaches to discovering my next path. I will be documenting what I spend my days on, where I see traction, what helps me alot. I know it will not be easy, at least it won’t be easy for me. I’m approaching tomorrow as an opportunity to introduce a series of daily life hacks. They start with baby steps like checklists, simple daily and weekly goals, charting my results, reaching out to talk to specific people each day and each week.
I don’t really know how wise this is, to put all of this in a public space. I don’t plan on using actual names of companies I meet with or individuals involved in the hiring process, but I will share various people and resources that help me in the pursuit. I haven’t found many good resources online, which is part of my decision to create this.
So how can you help me? First, subscribe to this substack. All content will be free to all subscribers. You will receive an email to whatever inbox you choose, and you can spend a few minutes with me online. Next, if you feel compelled share this with others. Leave comments. When I had a blog in the early 2000’s, comments were a key motivator and really created community. I’m hoping to do the same here. Lastly, if you want to contribute either as a monthly paid subcriber or a Founding Member, feel free to do this. My goal is not to have this be a significant revenue generator, but you will have some skin in the game if you contribute.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I’m so excited about a busy night and a busy, fruitful Wednesday!
